Ever so quietly a blond haired woman to twenty-three walked through the aisles with much ease.
She lugged a bucket of some sort, even a plate and couple of wrapped up packages.
Smiling, she saw what she was looking for. There, in a stall sleeping happily was a sorrel overo gelding.
Grinning, she gently placed the things near his stall door. Leaving she tied up her mahgonany bay mare to a post.
The gelding now awoke, nickering quietly as he drank. Everything was quiet.
"Surprise, Bails!" Courtney said, grinning.
The gelding, Bails, half reared and whickered. He nudged Courtney back, eagerly pressing his mug to her jean pockets.
Courtney grinned, "Happy birthday, Bails! I've got somethin' for ya." She then lifted the bucket which had layers of sugar cubes, hay and carrots.
Bails whickered happily as he ate. He knew was happy for this, he loved this kind of cake.
Courtney smiled, "Don't eat all of it yet, boy. I've got another surprise." She walked away, untying her mare from the post. As they entered, Bails whinnied happily.
Illusion, the Paso Fino mare, whinnied in reply.
Smiling, Courtney opened Bails's stall door and allowed Illusion in.
Bails had moved, allowing Illusion to eat his cake as well.
Courtney loved how they both acted towards each other. When Bails was born, he was alone in his pasture, then along came Illusion. Bails was only a couple months old when Illusion was his pasture buddy. Together they had an unbreakable bond. Bails was protective of Illusion, and was in love with her. He didn't care if he was a gelding, to him, Illusion was his mare.
Snorting, he gently nipped Illusion on the neck, whickering as he turned away innocently.
Illusion much thought of Bails as a friend, and nothing more. At times, she would play with him whenever possible. She nipped him back before eating the cake nearby.
When they were finished, Courtney offered Bails a present. Bails had torn into the wrapping, dropping them on the ground. Once it was revealed, there was a picture of Illusion and him when they were young.
Another present had a new black halter and engraved in a flame-like text read, 'No Day But Today.'
The final present was a new lead shank and new saddle pad, both in black. The saddle pad had No Day But Today engraved on it in the same text.
Smiling, Courtney walked off, putting away the new saddle pad and tossing away the old, ratty one. Once she returned, she allowed the dup to stay together for awhile. She walked into the stall and pinned up the picture of them when they were yearlings.
